At launch: single player only
Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. You play the story of Jason and Lucia across Leonida. There is no online multiplayer mode announced for November 19, and the Extended Look in August did not show any online features.
That also means you don't need an online subscription to play the story. As usual, you will need an internet connection to download the game and any updates.
Is a GTA 6 online mode coming?
Nothing is announced. Rockstar has not named an online mode for GTA 6, given it a date, or said how it would be sold.
What we do know is how Rockstar handled this last time. GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, about two weeks after GTA 5. It then grew into one of the biggest online games of the decade. Most people expect something similar for GTA 6 at some point, but the timing and format are open. It could be part of the game or a separate release. Nobody outside Rockstar knows.
What happens to the current GTA Online?
It is not shutting down. Take-Two has repeated this several times in 2026:
- In February, CEO Strauss Zelnick said he had every reason to believe the company would keep supporting GTA Online, because of its engaged community.
- On the August earnings call he said Take-Two expects to keep supporting it going forward.
- At the shareholder meeting on September 17, Take-Two said GTA 6 is a single-player title and that GTA Online will be supported after GTA 6's release and beyond.
Rockstar is still running regular GTA Online events, such as its Halloween content in October 2026.
What about progress transfer?
Not announced. There is no official word on moving your GTA Online character, money or cars to anything new. Treat any claim otherwise as a rumor.
What is not confirmed
- A GTA 6 online mode, its name, date or price.
- Player counts per session or crossplay.
- Whether GTA+ will connect to anything in GTA 6. A free month of GTA+ comes with digital pre-orders, but it is for GTA Online and the GTA+ games library.

Can I play GTA 6 with friends on November 19? No online mode is announced, so plan on playing the story solo.

Will GTA Online come to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S? It is already there. The current version runs on both consoles.

- November 19: plan for the story. There is a lot of it, on a map about twice the size of GTA 5's.
- GTA Online players: your game keeps running. No need to rush anything.
