The story runs on money
Rockstar's own summary of the game starts with a robbery. Jason and Lucia know the odds are against them, an "easy score" goes wrong, and they end up in a criminal conspiracy that spans the whole state of Leonida. Both characters come from that world. Jason worked for drug runners in the Keys after leaving the Army. Lucia has just come out of prison with a plan to change her luck.
So in GTA 6, earning money is not a side activity next to the story. It is the story.
What Rockstar has shown
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, released on August 27 on Netflix and then on Rockstar's site and YouTube, gave the clearest picture so far. In it you can see:
- Robberies in the open world. Jason and Lucia hold up stores in free roam, not only during scripted missions.
- Jobs for other people. Characters from Rockstar's cast hand out work, from small pickups to bigger jobs.
- Crew work. Raul Bautista, a veteran robber from Rockstar's cast, brings the pair in on bigger jobs, starting as his getaway drivers.
What the footage does not show is the menus: how much a job pays, how a bank account works, or what things cost. We will not guess.
What the Ultimate Edition adds
Rockstar's store pages list a few money-related extras in the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. These are content, not a cash bonus:
- PTT Youngin$ compound raid. You raid a gang compound in Southside Vice City and escape with special items and contraband.
- Ultimate-only shops. These include Rideout Customs, a car-customisation shop for interiors, rims and "donk" builds, which only opens with this edition.
- Vehicles. The '95 Grotti Cheetah, a '67 Vapid Dominator Buggy with a garage, and a Shitzu Squalo speedboat, among others. That means a few cars you will not have to pay for with in-game cash.
Every pre-order or purchase before November 20 also includes the Vintage Vice City Pack, which adds a '55 Vapid Stanier and a garage.
What is not confirmed
A lot of "GTA 6 money" content online is guesswork. Before launch, treat these as unverified:
- Exact payouts for any job, robbery or heist. Rockstar has not published any.
- Money glitches and cheats. Nobody can know a glitch in a game that is not out yet.
- Detailed economy rules reported from creator previews, such as separate cash balances or story missions that need a set amount of money. Some of these may turn out to be true. We treat them as rumors until the game confirms them.
What this means for you
- On day one, the safest way to earn is the one Rockstar has shown: robberies, jobs from the people you meet, and crew scores.
- Spend carefully early on. A car or a weapon you could get for free from an edition bonus is cash you can save.
- If you are deciding on the Ultimate Edition, the case is extra content, not extra money.
- Skip any video promising "infinite money on launch day."
From November 19 our player crew checks what really pays in the game, and our GTA 6 money guide fills in as each fact is confirmed.
