Leonida, not just Vice City
Earlier Vice City games stayed inside one city. GTA 6 goes much wider. Leonida is a fictional state with beaches, islands, swamps, small industrial towns and a national park. Rockstar presents it as one connected world rather than a big city with empty land around it.
Rockstar's official site and its downloadable postcards name these regions:
Vice City
The centre of the game and its biggest city. It is a modern version of the neon, beaches-and-nightlife city from the series, clearly based on today's Miami. Expect high-rises, clubs, beachfront districts and heavy traffic. The Vintage Vice City Pack, a pre-order bonus, includes a garage, Shore Court Garage, near Ocean Beach in Vice City, so that area will likely be one of your first stops.
Leonida Keys
A chain of small tropical islands linked by long roads and bridges, based on the Florida Keys. It is Jason's home turf. Rockstar's character bios put him in the Keys working for local drug runners, and he lives rent-free at a property owned by Brian Heder, a veteran smuggler who runs a boat yard there.
Grassrivers
Leonida's version of the Everglades: wetlands, waterways and wildlife. One of the in-game radio stations, Back Country Radio, even has a reporter who checks in from his Grassrivers airboat, which tells you how people get around out there.
Port Gellhorn
A coastal town that is far from the glossy holiday-brochure side of the state. Back Country Radio also covers Port Gellhorn.
Ambrosia
An industrial community in Leonida, built around a big local employer and the jobs it provides. Rockstar's description also hints that a biker gang runs some much less legal business in the area.
Mount Kalaga National Park
The northern park and wilderness area of Leonida. It is the most unexpected part of the map for a Florida-style game, and it should feel very different from the city and the coast.
Getting around: not only by road
A state built on islands, rivers and swamps means water matters. Rockstar's own bonus items hint at it: the Ultimate Edition includes a speedboat and a kayak, and the radio already mentions airboats in Grassrivers. Expect to use boats as much as cars in some parts of Leonida.
What is not confirmed
- Map size. Rockstar has not given a size, and comparisons with GTA 5 online are estimates.
- The full list of towns and districts. The six regions above are what Rockstar has named. There will be more places inside them.
- Leaked maps. We don't use them, and you should not plan around them.
There is good news for map fans: on launch day, November 19, Rockstar will add a free printable map of Leonida to its website, along with a cover poster.
What this means for you
- Starting out: Jason's side of the story is tied to the Keys, and Vice City is the hub of the whole state.
- Exploring: if you want a change of pace, Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga are the wild side of the map. Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia are the small-town side.
- Planning routes: grab Rockstar's printable map on November 19, then follow our GTA 6 map guide. It fills in with confirmed locations as our player crew checks them in the game.
